There are men who watch each of their hair falling out with despair, while others do not trouble even with their fully bald head. There is no reason to despair, because sparse or bald area can be made hairy with certain operative procedures.
Traditionally, bald area was resected and hairy skin taken from other areas was transplanted there. Today, this procedure is applied very rarely, because of the marked scar line resulting from it. Little, about half cm strips (of hairy scalp) with 10-20 hair bulbs are transplanted from the posterior part of the hairy head to the bald area. Once 50-100 such strips can be transplanted. The advantage of the procedure is that it can be done relatively quickly, but its disadvantage that the vitality of the transplanted hair bulbs is uncertain. In certain cases, even 50 % of them can be lost. In the same time, on the operated area from where hairs fell out, the little scar lines will become visible. This is why in today’s practice, thread by thread microgaft hair restoration technique has come into usage.
During the micrograft transplantation, at first a thin micrograft stripe containing about 1.000 hair bulbs is removed from the hairy nape, then it is dissected under magnification to mini and macro grafts containing only 1-2 bulbs. Then little recipient holes with 1-2 mm diameter are prepared on the bold area with incisions or laser technique. 1-2 hair bulbs are inserted into these holes. After this thread by thread transplantation the head is bandaged for 1-2 days. Washing hair is recommended after 6 days. If the patient is tolerant, the procedure can be done under local anaesthesia. Tolerance is necessary because of the relatively long (about 3 hours or more) duration of the procedure. During this time, approximately 500-800 hair bulbs can be transplanted. In order to gain the appropriate thickness of hair, the procedure is to be repeated two-three times. Expectable lasting result is about 80-90 %. This result is lasting, because hormonal sensitivity of hair bulbs originated from the nape is lower than that of the frontal hair bulbs. The transplanted area will not become bold any more.
